Context: The ‘Tulip Rally Beetle‘ was a unique 1500cc edition for the Netherlands by official VW importer Ben Pon. The new 1967 1500 Beetle had improved rear suspension, ‘black faux leather trim’, front disc brakes and was marketed in Belgium and Switzerland as the 1500 Sport. In Belgium D’Ieteren included special ‘1500 Sport’ side badges similar to their previously very successful Mach 1.

For the Netherlands the importer chose to offer each Dealer a similar but much more uprated edition and included the same 1500 Sport badges from D’Ieteren. They named it the Tulip Rally Kever because motor racing driver Ben Pon Jnr. had raced in the 1967 Tulip Rally (24.4.–27.4.1967, Noordwjk – Annecy – Noordwijk) and gained 13th place out of a total field of 66.

By all accounts the editions with their highly uprated equipment were difficult to sell at the time.
